Over 40-years teaching experience in animated storytelling, sees Paris' GOBELINS university has developed summer School for advanced-level students and to young professionals of all nationalities (available in English, Spanish, and French) to help them better understand the creative process, the structure, and the presentation of visual storytelling. Gobelins offers degree courses but only to those with 2 or more years experience and with a degree which is why Gobelins for myself will hopefully provide me with a summer school. The school, located in Paris offers students summer school programmes that offer character animation and story design. The courses are typically 11 days long and I plan to do these in the summer in between my university years. The prices range from €1000- €3100 with the visual story telling being €1500 and the character animation having a variety of packages to choose from (package 1 : 3 100 €, package 2 : 2 600€, package 3 : 1 600 €)depending on the level of course you want to take part in. The programme is 100% in English which is good, although I speak a lot of French anyway! The course is at the GOBELINS campus Paris - St Marcel.
Character Animation
After attending morning master classes, workshops will be held each afternoon. Over two weeks, students would be given an exercise to complete with the guidance of professional tutors. These workshops will take place in classrooms equipped with 2D and 3D equipment, including light boxes. These workshops include “Acting for Animators” activities. Those performance activities will help animators practice the gesture and movements that they will apply on their animations.
Classes this year would have been held from Monday July 6th to Friday July 17th 2020 from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. (times may flex). The times are done this way to allow participants to enjoy their own personal cultural discovery of Paris, with its many museums, exhibitions, art galleries, libraries, cinemas and historic areas. I love this feature and I thik it would be a fantastic opportunity!

In the workshops, however, participants will be working with tutors who will follow their projects in the language they feel most comfortable with (English, French, Spanish).
The course is the same time and length of the character animation course and is at the same time, hence me doing them over multiple years. There are 2 packages- package 1 : 3 100 € and package 2 : 2 600€. The course aims to get students a better understanding of the creative process, structure, and presentation in visual storytelling for people with a more advanced project. The aim of this level 2 is to help people to further develop their project, whether it is for film, television, animation, video games, VR, comics or children’s books, focusing on the art of blending story and image. Also to learn how to write a professional presentation for its treatment and craft a dynamic, visual presentation to pitch it.
The programme is designed for anyone interested in improving their storytelling ability, or to further advance an original project and learning to communicate their story to others through a written and oral presentation aka. a "pitch".
Topics include:
● The structure of story
● How to improve story
● Choosing intuition to break rules into mind blowing visual stories
● Visual research and “world building”
● Understand what a producer will expect to hear from you
● Crafting a treatment to present to professionals
● Crafting a visual presentation
● Improving public Speaking and your practice of the pitch.
Students are asked to arrive with a project describing the story already worked on or created. A storyline, a plot, a short description of the characters and the setting are also required, as well as their intentions and the form they want this story to take: animated film, illustration, comics, etc. Over the two weeks, with the guidance of professional tutors, the students jump into their ideas, story structure and development. They will assemble a written and a visual presentation and will pitch the project to a professional jury and receive feedback.
Lectures and master classes will be held in the morning. The purpose of these classes will be to give a solid tool kit to the participants to help advance their projects. Workshops to develop participants' individual projects will be held each afternoon and they will be supervised by tutors.
